Social Insurance in Egypt — How Much Is Deducted and Why
Social insurance is the first and largest fixed deduction on most Egyptian salaries. This guide explains the system under Law 148 of 2019: who pays what, what the 2026 insurable wage cap means for your payslip, and what you get in return.
Contribution rates: 11% employee, 18.75% employer
The monthly contribution is a percentage of the insurable wage — your gross salary up to a legal cap that is updated yearly. For 2026 the cap is EGP 16,700 per month.
The employee pays 11%, deducted from the salary. The employer pays a further 18.75% on top (not deducted from you). In total, 29.75% of the insurable wage is remitted to the authority.
What the insurable wage cap means
If your gross salary is EGP 16,700 or less, the percentages apply to your full salary. If it is higher, they apply to EGP 16,700 only: the maximum employee deduction is 16,700 × 11% = EGP 1,837 per month no matter how high your salary goes.
This is why total deductions as a percentage of salary fall once you pass the cap — insurance stays flat at EGP 1,837 while only income tax keeps growing.
What you get for your contribution
Your contribution funds your old-age pension, disability and death coverage, work-injury insurance, sickness insurance, and unemployment compensation under the law's conditions. Your contribution years and registered insurable wage determine your future pension.
Important: some companies register employees at a lower wage than they actually pay to cut costs. That reduces your monthly deduction but also reduces your pension and end-of-service entitlements — check the wage registered for you at the authority.
